Description: ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is a Government of India initiative to commemorate 75 glorious years of progressive India and celebrate its rich history, diverse population, magnificent culture and great achievement. Somerville School, Greater NOIDA celebrated this years’ Independence Day under the broader ambit of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ upholding the fervor of ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to honour our National Flag. Several activities were conducted to remind the younger generation about the struggle and sacrifices of the freedom fighters as they are not sensitive about the same as they have the privilege of the being born in a free nation. A special assembly in the school auditorium was conducted. Students from Classes I – XII participated with patriotic fervor. Principal, Dr. Mary Thomas in her address reminded the students about commitments to the nation and encouraged the struggle and honor for independence of martyrs. The students of Class II delivered a special recitation of the poem ‘Azadi’ on the occasion. The Indian Music Choir, rendered “Jhanda Ucha Rahe Hamara’ and ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ to honour the flag as a symbol of national pride and unity, strength and sacrifice. Through the dance presentations, students of Classes X-XII evoked feelings of loyalty and respect for the panoramic India. The tricolour was hoisted in the school premises on Independence Day by Principal Dr. Mary Thomas. The student council members saluted the sacrifices and paid their tribute to the motherland by singing the National Anthem. Students from Classes IX-XII staged a Nukkad Natak to familiarize the school about our duties of respect towards our National Flag. Our students participated in an array of craft activities conducted on this day. From making tricolor wristbands, fans and bookmarks they had a fulfilling day. Various competitions were also organised wherein the students of the Senior Wing participated in poster making, essay writing, quiz and slogan writing competition. Screening of ‘Lagaan’ was held for the students of classes Nursery to V. A special video on National War Museum was also screened. The senior students enjoyed ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ in the auditorium. The special assembly concluded with a prayer by Adithya Ajith Head Boy of the school seeking Lord Almighty’s blessings to keep watch over the country and maintain the values which have led us through to the tumultuous post-Independence years.
